Funky Stuff!

We’d like you to actually feel what NLP is about!

So we’ve created this page that has links to a whole bunch of “funky stuff”.  Each exercise is different and merely designed to raise your awareness of how your brain functions.  Knowing how it works will allow you to begin to discover how to use it more effectively.  Now we can’t share everything about NLP in a few quick and fun exercises so consider it as an introduction.  By attending training or coaching with us you’ll learn how to use these curiosities of the mind to improve your mental performance and thus impact all areas of your life!

Visual exercises

The first set of exercises are visual and you’ll be given a series of instructions to complete prior to scrolling down to the next piece.  If you want to actually “feel” what NLP is about, which is in essence just how your brain functions then follow the instructions on each page to the letter.  You’ll notice how your brain works in strange, yet powerful ways.  You may have seen or experienced these kind of things before.  You may believe that there is some trickery going on, but if you’d like to test it, please print the images and you’ll notice that even on paper they still have the same effect! You’ll have the option to comment on how you found each exercise at the bottom of each page.  Enjoy.  Here are the links to the visual exercises!

Auditory exercises

The second set of exercises are auditory. The links below here are for short audio tracks to give you an awareness of how your brain processes information.  They vary in length from 90 seconds to 9 minutes.  Its best to be seated and concentrating on the exercise to get the best effect.  Once you click on the link it will play automatically after about 10 seconds.  Once you’ve listened to it you’ll be able to use your browsers back button to return here.

Would you like some more Interesting stuff?

Derren Brown is a unique force in the world of illusion, he can seemingly predict and control human behaviour.  He doesn’t claim to be a mind-reader, instead he describes his craft as a mixture of magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship (nowhere does he mention NLP; after all he is in show business). Whatever you choose to call it, his unparalleled performances amaze and unsettle all those who watch him. This is a powerful and provocative form of entertainment, unlikely to be imitated for a long while.

Do a Google search on Derren Brown.  Watch some of his clips on “you tube”.  Now Darren uses many techniques including NLP.  Can you spot when and where (a challenge even for some NLP Practitioners I’m sure)!  He’s very good so at times it’s hard to spot but on some he shows you how (at a superficial level at least), such as on the Red BMX clip.  How many NLP techniques can you spot?  To start you off there’s state elicitation, anchoring, verbal suggestion, Milton language, obviously rapport, non verbal suggestion……..  If that last sentence meant nothing to you then you really ought to consider learning about NLP as marketers use NLP (knowing or not) when they create marketing materials to increase your desire for their products (companies such as Coca Cola are very good).  They are not alone, blockbuster Hollywood films use NLP strategies to ensure that the film is captivating to the extent that you ride a roller coaster of emotions just watching it (if you have ever watched “Jaws” and now know someone with a fear of sharks you’ll know what I mean).  As you can see NLP is all around you, it’s like gravity, and Darren uses it to really stack the deck to work his magic!

Derren Brown pushed good taste to the limit with his “Heist” in which he programs people to conduct an armed robbery without their knowing!  Here’s a link to the Channel 4 TV show in the UK. It’s fun viewing (except the Milgram experiment which has nothing to do with NLP) and covers aspects including NLP techniques of anchoring and accelerated learning.  Rest assured that what is OK for TV is not practiced in reality as we as NLP Master Practitioners are bound by ethics of conduct where by we act responsibly and in the interest of the client at all times.

NLP is what is, it is neither good nor bad, it’s just the way the brain works.  The way we choose to use NLP can of course be for good or bad, just in the same way that a can of spray paint is neither good nor bad, it is the user that decides to spray his car or somebody else’s property.  In Darren’s case, we’d consider his use unethical, but that seems to make for good entertainment.  We just have to watch Simon Cowell in action to know what drives TV ratings.  I’d urge you not to judge NLP based on the way some might use it, but the genuine power it has to effect change within us.

Consider the placebo effect with fake drugs or fake surgery.  No side effects, much cheaper and yet they still produce a positive healing result, all due to the natural ability of the body to heal itself.  When NLP is used in healing it merely takes advantage of the bodies ability to heal itself and work with the mind and body. There are many good videos of people using NLP in medical situations and although they may be a little boring by comparison to the average viewer, they are no less magical.  A search on youtube can show you hundreds of videos of NLP being used for chronic pain treatment and acute pain relieve during dentistry and surgery.  There are other videos of NLP in use including dealing with trauma, phobias, allergies, accelerated learning, healing, depression, eating disorders, relationships etc.  The positive uses of NLP are incredible and real.  My wife Kathy and I have used NLP to complete firewalks on hot coals and after that, along with hypnosis, as our chosen pain relief method when Kathy was in labour with our son.  We use NLP daily so that we can perform at higher standards with less effort.  We have sought to show you many applications of NLP, both good and bad, practical and entertaining, so as to give you a balanced, broader understanding of its potential.  As you can see, with something this powerful one really has to consider its ethical use and be educated in its use.

We hope you have enjoyed your fun experiences above.  You’re probably ready to see how you can now apply these concepts and many others in a practical way in your life.  The next logical step is to book on one of our courses to find out how you may learn more about ethical and practical use of NLP so that you may use it positively in your life.
